In this new threepart series, wildlife camera operators follow six baby animals as they face the challenges of surviving their first year on Earth. In tonight’s premiere, the first three months in an animal’s life prove critical as they rapidly get to grips with their new family and the challenges of the environment that surrounds them. In Kenya, a newborn elephant calf is learning how to keep up with her fast-moving herd. In Sri Lanka, a one-weekold primate has to quickly learn the ropes. And at the edge of the Arctic, five-week-old fox cubs must learn to hunt before their siblings beat them to limited supplies of food.

Bears have long captured the imagination of many, but as some of the largest animals on earth, they need more than just the ‘bare necessities’ to survive in today’s ever-changing world. This 60-minute special explores how bears across the world have overcome many of the challenges of life – from finding food and raising cubs, to confronting rivals and habitat loss – all thanks to brains, brawn and a remarkable ability to adapt.
