Nervous wait on scans

COSTLY LOSS: Club hopeful Selwood, Clark not out long

- JOSH BARNES

GEELONG is waiting on scans for injured duo Joel Selwood and Jordan Clark as it counts the cost of its loss to Collingwood.

Selwood appeared to feel a tweak in his hamstring early in the 22-point loss on Thursday night and watched the final three quarters of the match from the bench.

The 32-year-old had hamstring surgery over pre-season.

While Geelong coach Chris Scott said post-match the club was confident the setback was not related to that surgery, Selwood had a scan on Friday, soon after 2pm Perth time.

The veteran told Channel 7 during the match that the injury felt like cramp and, while it wasn’t debilitating, it was enough to rule him out of the rest of the contest.

Playing in his first game since Round 1, Clark dislocated his right shoulder after a collision with Collingwood ruckman Brodie Grundy in the third term.

Clark missed Geelong’s finals series last year with an elbow injury.

He was set for a scan about 3pm on Friday.

“We’re hoping it’s on the minor end (but) I’m not really sure yet,” Scott said of Clark after the game.

Geelong was not the only team to suffer injury blows out of Thursday’s bruising encounter, with Collingwood star Jordan De Goey set for finger surgery after damaging the flexor tendon in his right middle finger during his fivegoal display.

Geelong will be hoping Mitch Duncan is passed fit to replace Selwood in the midfield should the captain be ruled out.

Duncan is on track to play against Fremantle on Monday week after suffering his own hamstring injury against the Brisbane Lions in Round 6.

After being unable to come together with Collingwood for a scratch match this week, the unselected Geelong players held an intense training session in Perth on Friday.

Geelong is confident its midfield depth, which includes Charlie Constable, Lachie Fogarty, Zach Guthrie and James Parsons, will be able to fill the void created by the latest injuries.
