Selwood a chance of returning for West Coast clash

- JOSH BARNES

GEELONG captain Joel Selwood has given himself a chance to face the West Coast Eagles on Saturday as he recovers from a hamstring strain.

Selwood felt a tweak in his hamstring in the first quarter against Collingwood in Round 7 and cautiously sat out the remaining three quarters.

The midfielder has ramped up his running in recent days and will press a claim to play the Eagles, in what will be the first of four games the Cats play in 14 days.

“It flashed before my eyes that it could have been a longer injury if I had played through it,” Selwood told K Rock.

“I’m not sure if I will make it back for the West Coast one but I will be pretty close to it.

“I ran fast (on Monday). I put a couple of good sessions together throughout the week. I’m a fair way down the track.”

Selwood was joined on the track in the running session by Quinton Narkle who also made good strides this week in his recovery from a hamstring injury.

Livewire Nakia Cockatoo is also progressing well in his long return to AFL level.

Cockatoo hasn’t played since Round 3, 2018, but Selwood said he wasn’t far away after playing full minutes in Geelong’s scratch match on Sunday.

“I haven’t seen (Cockatoo) today but I take it that he has pulled up well again,” Selwood said. “I think we expect to see him (in) this next little period and I think we will all enjoy it.”

The Cats skipper used a rare game on the sidelines wisely on Monday night when he sat with a bunch of first-year players and club chief executive Brian Cook in the stands.

Selwood said he didn’t overwhelm the youngsters with too many tactics early but was willing to give a lesson or two as the game unfolded.
