Grovedale star Moran to lead new women’s side

- JOSH BARNES

HAVING enjoyed so much about cricket in his time as a player, Grovedale’s Jordan Moran is ready to give something back.

The club’s male star batsman has jumped into a new role as the women’s team coach — and has promised to bring fun to the game.

The Tigers will enter a team in the Barwon Women’s Cricket Competition this summer.

Moran will oversee the team, using coaching experience he has gathered from leading the New South Wales under-19 side, working alongside Mike Hussey at the Sydney Thunder and with the NSW Breakers, among other stops.

“I’m seeing it as a challenge for the club to get a brand new side off the ground and being able to grow Grovedale Cricket Club is an exciting opportunity,” he said.

“The whole reason why I coach is because I have taken so much from the game. It is my way of giving back.

“The philosophy will be to have fun. If we don’t win a game, we don’t win a game.

“As long as the ladies are enjoying having fun in each other’s company and learning and growing through their skills.”

Grovedale’s newest cricket team won’t have to look far for inspiration after Moran cemented his position among the premier players in Geelong when named in the VCCL Team of the Year.

The left-hander was elevated to the team, selected from the best local cricketers across the state, after an outstanding season, in which he smashed 644 runs at an average of 92. He also won the Jack Sing Medal as the best player in GCA1.

Moran described it as his most consistent senior season and said his game has matured in recent years, allowing him to pass on some wisdom to younger teammates.

“I’ve really enjoying the last couple of years mentoring some of the younger guys coming through, like Jake Alsop,” Moran said.
