Plenty do not want to mask up

- TAMARA MCDONALD

LOCAL doctors have seen a rush in requests for exemptions from wearing masks, after face coverings became mandatory in regional Victoria this week.

The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has confirmed people do not need a medical certificate stating they have a lawful reason for not wearing a face covering, nor do they need to apply for an exemption or permit.

But doctors are urging all who are able to wear a mask to help fight coronavirus.

The DHHS says if people are stopped by police, they will be asked to confirm the lawful reason they are not wearing a face covering.

Western Victoria Primary Health Network clinical spokeswoman and local GP Anne Stephenson said while most patients were now open to wearing masks, some patients found them “suffocating” and challenging to wear for long periods.

“Some GPs are reporting that patients are requesting medical exemptions from wearing a mask,” she said.

“Most of the requests are from people who suffer from anxiety or feel claustrophobic; some others have breathing difficulties.

“GPs are not giving out exceptions unless there is a valid reason because it is now vital for everyone in the community to make short-term sacrifices for long-term community gain.

“Masks make a difference, and it’s in our collective interest for as many people as possible to wear them.”

Victorian Royal Australian College of General Practitioners chair, Lara GP Cameron Loy, said like many GPs across Victoria he had treated patients seeking an exemption in recent weeks.

“GPs cannot actually grant an ‘exemption’ but we can provide a letter detailing a patient’s medical condition, which may preclude them from wearing a mask or face covering,” Dr Loy said.

“There are some legitimate reasons why someone may not be able to wear a mask or face covering including conditions that impact breathing.”

Dr Loy said wearing masks was not just about protecting yourself but people with whom you came into contact.

“Unless there is a compelling medical explanation for why you can’t cover your face, please mask up,” he said.

“Within reason, feel free to experiment on what works best for you. Make sure that it is has at least two layers, ideally three, and can be fitted securely over your nose and mouth. It is also vital to wash your collection of masks after each use.”
