Probe on need for parkland

- CHAD VAN ESTROP

THE need for more parkland and sporting fields, forests, bushland, wildlife corridors and waterways will be examined by a state parliament committee.

The committee, chaired by South Barwon MP Darren Cheeseman, will also look into the impact of population growth on open space.

“Rapid population growth in Melbourne and key regional centres has transformed our state, with benefits as well as challenges,” Mr Cheeseman said.

“The preservation of our state’s environmental infrastructure is one of those challenges.

“This inquiry is seeking the views and suggestions of community members on what can be done to enhance the amenity of our suburbs and towns, considering both recent and future development across our state.

“The COVID-19 emergency has highlighted the importance of people being able to access parks and open space in their local neighbourhoods.

“We want to hear the insights and experiences of people with expertise in the planning of environmental infrastructure.

“At the same time, we want the community to let us know what their needs are as we continue developing our state, and any concerns they have about current practices in this area.”

Submissions to the Legislative Assembly’s Environment and Planning Committee can be made until September 28.

Details on how to make a submission are available from the committee’s website. Visit parliament.vic.gov.au/epc-la
