- TAMARA MCDONALD

AN eighth resident of a Highton aged care home struck by a fatal COVID-19 outbreak has died after contracting coronavirus.

Opal Aged Care “regrettably” confirmed the Opal South Valley resident died on Friday.

“The resident was being cared for in hospital and was visited by family in the preceding days,” a spokeswoman said.

“We extend our sympathies to the family and friends, and our thanks to the team at University Hospital Geelong and our dedicated Opal team who cared for the resident for a number of years.”

An additional Opal South Valley worker has tested positive, bringing the number of staff who have contracted coronavirus to 21.

In total 31 residents, including eight who have died, have tested positive for coronavirus since the outbreak emerged in late July.

The Opal Aged Care spokeswoman said 20 of the 23 previously active cases among residents had recovered.

“(This) means there are only three active cases at South Valley and we are moving towards the point where there are no active COVID cases in our care home.”
