Highton hungry for finals success

- TOBY PRIME

HIGHTON has warned it is building momentum as it hopes to this weekend secure the right to host the opening week of playoffs.

Highton remains in second on the Premier Bowls standings after a 81-63 win over Lara on Saturday, with one round remaining before finals.

David Priddle’s rink of Robert Priddle, Ian Johnson and Craig Elliott put down the platform with its comfortable win as the home side pocketed 14 points.

Skip Dan Priddle said his side was “hungry for a bit of success”.

“The key message is we’re building ... at the right time of the season,” Priddle said.

“We’ve got a well balanced side that’s hungry for a bit of success.

“We’ve put some expectations on ourselves to be good. We’ve put the side together — I’ve only been at the club for the last two years.

“We’ve been building for this and (we’re) hungry to achieve something.”

A win against Bareena this weekend would give it the chance to host one of Ocean Grove (third) or Queenscliff (fourth) but a loss would likely thrust it into a cutthroat affair against minor premier Eastern Park.

Priddle said it was important his side finished the regular season with winning form.

“We’ve been up that pointy end all season and we’d be keen to finish off the homeand-away in good preparation for finals,” he said.

“There’s still things we’re improving on week on week.

“Each game we play we learn things and we look to work on those each week with the desire to be better the next week.

“That’s a continuous improvement thing that we have and stick with.”

In other results on the weekend, Queenscliff booked a top-four berth with a tense win over Bareena, Ocean Grove comfortably defeated City of Geelong, Belmont moved off the bottom of the ladder with a victory over Drysdale and Eastern Park remained at the top of the ladder with a close win over Bell Post Hill.
