Erskine ready for Hawks

- DANIEL BREEN

JORDAN Erskine is living the boyhood dream in the Anglesea forward line.

The star Roo is the Bellarine Football League’s leading goalscorer with 23, two ahead of Newcomb’s Andrew Steele and three clear of Torquay spearhead Lucas Anderson.

He’s fresh from a 10-goal haul against Portarlington last weekend and was also the hero when the Roos came from the clouds to knock over Newcomb by two points in Round 3.

Erskine’s seventh goal

against the Power came with 90 seconds on the clock and proved to be the matchwinner.

“Newcomb played really well against us and in the second half we opened up the 50 and they gave me a bit of space and we played a lot better footy,” Erskine said.

“It was a really exciting game and I was kind of nervous the whole way through and late I was really feeling the 18 months off that we had.

“My legs were really heavy but we moved Dale Carson forward that day and he popped one over the top and I ran into the goalsquare.”

In between best-on-ground performances, Erskine had 11 scoring shots against Queenscliff but struggled with the blustery conditions and finished with two majors.

“It would have been a better start if I hadn’t have kicked 2.9 against Queenscliff but other than that, I’ve been kicking pretty well,” Erskine said.

“I normally tend to kick them reasonably well at the start of the year and maybe not as well when it gets colder. The warmer weather and the harder ground early in the season makes it a bit easier.”

The second-placed Roos take on third-placed Drysdale, a team brimming with confidence after a huge fortnight.

Erskine believes he and his teammates have yet to hit top gear and hopes today will be the day the Roos start to click.

“It’s been a little bit of a difficult start to the season,” he said. “We’ve played well in patches but if we can have these patches for a longer period of time, hopefully we can do that against a top side and nail them.

“We haven’t played our best but we’re still winning the really close games, which hopefully proves we’re a good team. The game we lost, we only played one good half of footy.”

Anglesea gets its opportunity to put together a fourquarter performance against the Hawks.

“Going into the season, Barwon Heads and Torquay looked like the teams to beat but anyone can beat anyone on their day,” Erskine said.

“It’s (the Drysdale game) one of those real eight point games. They’re full of confidence, they’re a good team and it’s going to be an interesting game.”

“Both teams have had injuries and have players coming back in, but hopefully we can string some good quarters together.”
