Bannockbur­n building solid title defence

BANNOCKBUR­N continues to rebuild a strong team to defend its premiershi­p title, the new-look outfit completing a solid 52-35 victory over a tenacious Belmont Lions at the weekend.

The Tigers opened up a 15goal lead in the first half with Kailah Tom dominant in the scoring circle.

The Lions clawed their way back into the game after the long break, winning the third quarter on the back of inspiratio­nal leader Courtney Leith through the midcourt.

Alana Nicol turned in another consistent display through the centre for Bannockbur­n, and teammate Jamie-Lee Bennett again won her coach’s best player award for quality play at wing attack.

In other weekend matches, Thomson showed it is starting to roll into its best form, with an impressive 61-23 demolition of Corio.

The Devils struggled to find avenues to attack, with Allie Drake again dominant in defence. Calsey Wolak spent time at both ends of the court in her best game for the year for the Tigers.

Winchelsea backed up its breakthrou­gh win last week, with an impressive 54-36 victory over Bell Post Hill.

Sarah Hampshire controlled the defensive court for the Blues and coach Casey Carroll and her sister Belinda Minne were dominant in the middle of the court.

East Geelong was again impressive in routing Anakie 65-20.

Ashleigh Cushion improved her status within the star-studded line-up, while Molly Neeson was the Eagles’ dominant defender.

Inverleigh returned to the winners’ list with a 44-33 victory over Geelong West Giants

Werribee Centrals warmed up for its annual Ladies Day, with a 55-35 win over North Geelong.
