Winning while they work

Grubbers praised for ‘workmanlike’ attitude

- DANIEL BREEN

OCEAN Grove coach Pete Davey has hailed his young charges for their workmanlike display against Queenscliff, a week after causing the first boilover of the season.

The Grubbers have been a surprise packet to many but Davey and his staff have not been surprised by their young side’s rapid development.

After conceding the opening two goals of the match, Ocean Grove held Queenscliff at bay to win 14.12 (96) to 8.10 (58).

“It was very different to last week (the Grubbers’ comefrom-behind win against Barwon Heads) and it was good to see that workmanlike stuff,” Davey said.

“After being on such a high last week, I was really interested in how they would go this week and they responded well.

“It was a lot more open than (against) Barwon Heads, with the style of footy and the ground as well. And then it was a bit of slog in the rain in the last quarter when both sides were quite tired.”

Small forward Sam Donegan booted five goals for the Grubbers, while James Paterson, Harley Pearce, Connor Pickett, Jake Ward and Oliver Monteith also caught the coach’s eye.

“We had a lot of guys who won their position and did something when they got the ball and everyone is playing their role, which is really pleasing,” Davey said.

Ocean Grove moved into the top five courtesy of its fourth victory of the season and Davey said his group would continue to aim high.

“I’ve been pretty bullish about these kids. We’ve seen a lot of good stuff internally and we know where we’re tracking,” Davey said.

“We’ll keep the reigns on a little because we want to play our type of footy and it’s working. A lot of it comes down to training standards and these boys train as hard as any group I’ve seen.

“It’s exciting. Each week more people are coming to watch us play. A lot of what we’re trying to do is based on community and we want the town to be proud of what we’re doing, so there’s a really good feeling about the place.”

ANGLESEA won another thriller, accounting for the inform Drysdale by three points. Jordan Erskine booted six goals, including the matchwinner, as the Roos prevailed 14.8 (92) to 13.11 (89).
