ROAD DOUBLE TROUBLE FOR CATS

- BETH DAVIS

AFTER splitting the Saturday night home game with a loss for the women and a win for the men, the Geelong Supercats dropped both games on Sunday in their road trip to Waverley.

With Sarah O’Neill suffering an ankle injury on Saturday night, the Supercats women had just eight players take the floor against the team they had easily accounted for the week before.

Geelong held a slim lead for most of the match before Waverley made its run in the final quarter to win the game 64-61.

Rebekah O’Donnell notched a double double with 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Alex Duck and Steph Blicavs led the assist count with six and five respectively of the 20 team assists for the game.

The loss takes the women to a record of 1-4, having gone down to Nunawading 78-81 on Saturday night.

The Supercats had their hearts broken by the Spectres’ Rachel Brewster, who iced a three-pointer with just 0.5 seconds on the clock to snatch victory for the visitors.

After a one-point win (66-65) against Nunawading on Saturday night, and a close game against Waverley the week before, the Supercats men were prepared for a battle in the away rematch on Sunday.

In a game where neither side was prepared to give an inch, Waverley’s Durrell McDonald scored to send the game to overtime.

Despite 29 points for the game from Isaac Turner, the Supercats were unable to get it over the line in overtime, losing their first game of the season, 99-95.

Owen Odigie also racked up a double double for the game with 18 points and 13 rebounds.

The Supercats return to the Geelong Arena on Saturday to host the Melbourne Tigers.
