LEAKY WARRIORS WITH WORK TO DO:
NORTH Geelong has “got a fair bit to work on” after conceding four second-half goals in the 5-1 loss to Pascoe Vale on Saturday.
The Warriors are winless since Round 3 and have just one victory from seven games.
Captain Ryan Oppermann scored the game’s first goal at the 11-minute mark at Elcho Park and scores were level 1-1 at the main interval.
But the home side capitulated in a 29-minute period in the second half to concede four goals in a performance coach Zeljko Gagula described as a “disappointing result”.
“At halftime, you wouldn’t have picked to say they were going to go on with it and win 5-1,” Gagula said.
“On the contrary, the first 15 minutes of the second half, I felt as if we were all over them.
“We had another two opportunities to sort of seal the game and you could feel if we weren’t going to convert those chances and put them away that it was going to come back to bite us.
“Conceding two goals from two set pieces within the space of four minutes … was the damage.
“They’re goals we shouldn’t have conceded from set plays. We’ve got a fair bit to work on but, yeah, disappointed with the result big time.”
North Geelong has just six premiership points and sits ninth on the NPL2 table.
Gagula said three draws in the opening seven rounds of the season had been costly.
“We’re scoring goals — and we probably could have and should have scored a few more goals in some of those other games,” he said.
“Those other games where we drew, we probably should have won and even going back to last week, same scenario — three-all but we probably should have gone on and won the game.
“Conceding goals has been our problem
“Obviously in between we’ve played those FFA Cup games and we’ve won those, but it’s the league where we need to start picking up points.
“We’re just going have to work harder. Look, we’ll get there but we’d like to get there sooner rather than later.”
