Ammos look to play through the pain and back into form

- DANIEL BREEN

PERENNIAL BFL finalists Geelong Amateur will look to overcome a heavy injury toll and recent indifferent form when it takes on Newcomb Power on Saturday.

Ammos have played some seriously attractive football at times but the gap between their best and worst has been too great, says coach Kane Tenace.

“We haven’t played the footy we would have liked to but we’re looking forward to bouncing back and trying to play some good footy this weekend,” Tenace said.

“We’re definitely looking for consistency because our best has still been pretty good, but the difference between our best and worst has been a fair way off.”

Bradley Surkitt has been a key contributor in the good and bad patches, reaping the rewards of strong pre-seasons in 2020 and leading into this season.

“Surkey is having the best year he’s had for a little while. He did a really good pre-season last year and didn’t get to play but he’s been really good with training this year as well and it shows,” Tenace said.

At 2-4, there is still time for Ammos to make a charge at the BFL’s top five but they will need to get their skates on.

Tenace’s cause has not been helped by an onset of hamstring strains and tears among a heavy injury toll at Queens Park.

On top of the hamstring injuries, Chris Kangars is expected to miss at least five matches after dislocating a finger and causing ligament damage last weekend.

The good news is Bevan Shelley’s knee injury is not as serious as first thought. He could be back within a month.

“We’ve had a fair few hamstrings. It’s been one of those things where each week we get a couple back and then we lose a couple,” Tenace said.

“We’ve consistently had eight or nine guys out. We’ve also had a couple of broken bones, so it’s not exclusively the hammies but we can’t quite get everyone fit at the same time.

“There’s been a little bit of bad luck and that, combined with not playing footy for 12 months, means we have seen more injuries at local level than we usually do.”
