St Kilda ‘stiff’ to go down, says Scott

- TOBY PRIME

GEELONG coach Chris Scott says St Kilda was “probably a bit stiff” in the Cats’ 21-point win at Marvel Stadium on Friday night.

The Saints dominated the first half but failed to apply any scoreboard pressure, going into halftime with eight more scoring shots but only a three-point lead.

Scott said his side was “a bit lucky”.

“When you come away from a game where you haven’t played as a collective as well as we would have liked, that’s always pleasing,” Scott said.

“I think we’re a bit lucky to be honest. That was our observation, especially early in the game.

“They were all over us early, couldn’t kick straight, could’ve really put us under some pressure but the second half was a bit more in our favour.

“That’s, I think, one of the marks of a good team — one that can not be playing that well but find a way to get the game back on our terms.

“But even late, I thought St Kilda played well.

“My sense coming away from it was they played well, they defended us well and they were probably a bit stiff.”

Geelong kicked five of the first six goals in the second half to break the game open.

Defender Lachie Henderson also continued his career resurgence with another strong performance down back.

“A couple of years ago, we were at a bit of a fork in the road with our list management trying to work out what our defensive group was going to look like into the future when Harry Taylor finished and Lachie was one of those,” he said. “He’s in outstanding form. I think none of us should internally should be talking about his age — just judge him on how he’s playing.”

The Cats will now look ahead to a Saturday afternoon clash against Gold Coast at GMHBA Stadium.
