More help for our AFLW side in upcoming draft

- LACHIE YOUNG, NICK D’URBANO

GEELONG has become one of five AFLW sides to be provided with priority picks at the coming draft after a review from the AFL Commission into teams’ performances over the past two seasons.

The five bottom teams on the AFLW ladder in 2021 — Gold Coast, the Cats, West Coast, St Kilda and Richmond — will all receive priority selections after the AFL Commission ticked off on special assistance recommendations.

The win/loss record of the clubs over the past two seasons, percentage, performance against teams above and below them on the ladder and an assessment on each side’s current list were contributing factors in the decision.

The Suns and the Cats already held the opening two picks in the draft and will now occupy all picks between six and nine thanks to the addition of two extra selections each.

Geelong chief executive Brian Cook said the club welcomed the additional picks.

“The AFL has been outstanding in understanding the unique position we are in with regard to our women’s program,” Cook said.

“It is important for the game that all clubs field competitive teams to ensure the games are attractive for players, supporters and fans. We can now plan for the upcoming draft and player movement period with certainty and look forward to making progress in the coming seasons.”

In addition to the two extra selections, Geelong will also be able to sign two mature aged players from the local region.

Dates for the draft and the AFLW sign and trade period are yet to be determined.
