Young voices wanted
Submit your vision for our future
THE region’s federal politicians are calling on people under 21 years old to submit speeches about their vision for Australia in 20 years that could be read out in parliament.
Each of the Geelong region’s three federal politicians will read out a 90-second speech from a constituent during Youth Voice in Parliament Week in late October.
Victorian Liberal senator Sarah Henderson said the process allowed the selected winner to voice an issue and create meaningful change for the future.
“Raise our Voice is a very important opportunity for the voices of all young people across Australia, especially young women, to be heard,” Senator Henderson said.
“I warmly encourage young people aged under 21 to submit a speech on the topic: What is your vision for Australia in 20 years?”
Corio MP and deputy federal Labor leader Richard Marles said the project would put young people at the centre of national parliament. “It’s the perfect place for young people to elevate the issues that are important to them,” Mr Marles said.
“I encourage young people to submit their speech and I look forward to reading a speech from a local young person who sees a vision for Australia through the lens of their Geelong community.”
Corangamite Labor MP Libby Coker said young people represented Australia’s future.
“That’s why it’s so important that we give space for their voices to be heard,” Ms Coker said.
“It’s time we gave young people a seat at the decisionmaking table, and allow them to participate in shaping policies that will affect their futures. I welcome the submissions from young people about their vision for what Australia should look like in 20 years,” she said.
