Belmont family classic

- PETER FARAGO

A THREE-bedroom Belmont residence that’s been in the one family since 1973 has beaten price hopes by $80,000 as onsite auctions returned to Geelong on Saturday.

One of the first auctions to be called in the street on Saturday attracted six bidders and sold for $705,000.

The 650sq m Davis St property was snapped up by a buyer who had already sold up in Highton and was keen on the position near Belmont’s McDonald Reserve and the suburb’s popular schools.

Hayeswinckle auctioneer Michelle Winckle said it was a fantastic location right in the heart of Belmont.

“We’ve got the football ground literally on the doorstep, a play park at the end of the street, it’s walking distance to the shops, walking distance to Waurn Ponds Shopping Centre, walking distance to Clairvaux College, walking distance to Belmont High,” she said.

Ms Winckle said the solid home had been owned by the family since 1973. “It’s a rare opportunity to buy into the market, with a north-facing 650sq m block and a big garage at the back.

“The home itself can be modernised or you can move straight in and start living the Belmont lifestyle.”

Buyer Lauren MacLachlan said her kids go to school in Belmont and play sport locally

“It’s perfect for the kids,” she said.

The property was listed with $575,000 to $625,000 price hopes, with the reserve price at the top of the range

Bidding opened at $580,000 with bidders active before the property was declared on the market. A sixth bidder entered the race at $685,000 but couldn’t match the eventual buyer.

The auction ended a sevenweek campaign to sell the property. Listing agent Matthew Roberts had postponed the auction twice as the regional Victorian lockdown dragged on but was confident the buyer pool would be strong.

The house has a spacious living room and dine-in kitchen and three bedrooms, one with separate outdoor access, and a barbecue area outside.

Belmont’s median house price has climbed 17.2 per in 12 months to $680,000.
