Widely travelled Lass has city win

- GORDON ARMSTRONG

IF prizes were handed out for Australia’s most travelled race horse, then Marymount Lass would be right up there.

A $26 winner at Morphettville on Saturday in a heat of the Skybeau Series over 2023m, the Trevor Daytrained seven-year-old mare is used to roaming far and wide for success.

Chalking up a sixth win from 41 starts, and career earnings approaching $100,000, the mare has now won at Morphettville, Oakbank, Quorn and Kingscote since Day and wife Julie took over the mare’s training about 12 months ago, and at Hanging Rock and Alice Springs with previous trainer Neil Dyer.

Recent placings at Jamestown and Roxby Downs have added to the road map with visits to Strathalbyn, Gawler, Broken Hill, Penola, Swan Hill, Mildura, Katherine, Darwin and a swag of Victorian regional tracks including Moe, Colac, Yarra Valley and Echuca over the years with Dyer.

Day, who races Marymount Lass with wife Julie and Kingscote-based Donna Stanborough, said it was a thrill to win with the mare at South Australian headquarters.

“She just loves to race and we love to travel and especially in the days before there were travel restrictions,” Day said. “I knew we had a pretty handy one when we first had her.

“We got the horse through an auction and only paid

$1200 for her. Interestingly the sire was Hard Spun, the same sire of a horse we raced before called Red Pepper, whom we lost to colic. It was probably meant to be that we got this one (Marymount Lass).

“We are a very small stable so have the time to put in the one-on-one care horses need.”

Jockey Karl Zechner, who rode Marymount Lass to victory on Saturday, praised the Day team for their work.

“I have had a few rides for Trevor and his horses are always placed well,” he said.

Marymount Lass is expected to line up in the $102,250 Skybeau Stayers’ Series final over 2500m at Morphettville on Melbourne Cup day (November 2) after qualifying on Saturday.
