School’s uniform solution

Christian College apologises, gives extra year for transition

- SUSIE O’BRIEN

PARENTS have been given an extra year to transition to a controversial new “wardrobe” at a Geelong school that is gender-neutral and trans-seasonal.

A huge backlash from parents and students from Christian College Geelong ensued after early images were released, with some dubbing it medieval and “straight out of an orphanage”.

More than 1000 people signed an online petition calling for the change to be scrapped, with debate so passionate the school’s board warned they could be subject to legal action for defamation.

As a result of the reaction, principal Glen McKeeman has given parents an extra year to transition to the new school uniform.

He said the “mix and match student wardrobe” would be inclusive, flexible and comfortable.

The uniform will be introduced from 2022 and must be worn by all students by 2025.

It does not have winter and summer pieces but a selection of items for all seasons.

Mr McKeeman said the initial reaction from parents was “unfortunate”.

“People got hold of an image that wasn’t authorised,” he said.

The full range, which includes shorts or culottes and pants for all girls, was launched to the school community on Monday.

It includes items that are more durable, breathable and easy to care for.

“The response has been very positive and quite overwhelming,” Mr McKeeman said.

He said the earlier feedback led to parents being given an extra year for transition.

“It was fairly clear that parents wanted more time,” he said.

Mr McKeeman said the uniform would end up the same price, or cheaper, because not all families had to buy all items. “Students can choose any item they want on a given day,” he said.

“Our aim is to allow ample time for families to prepare for the full introduction of the new mix-and-match wardrobe.

“Families will be able to pass on existing uniforms to siblings as well as buy new or second-hand existing uniforms during the transition.

“I accept that we could have had better communication around this change.

“We apologise that the issue has caused distress among some of the college community and parents.”

The creator of the petition, Tamara Carmichael, said she would close it once parents

had been given a chance to see the full range and provide comment.
