Tourism job-match drive
THE state government has launched a new job-matching pilot program aiming to find workers to fill tourism jobs in Geelong and along the Surf Coast, as the state reopens in time for a summer tourism boost.
Regional Development Minister Mary-Anne Thomas on Thursday visited Geelong to announce the $400,000 Tourism Jobs Bank trial, funded via the state’s Regional Recovery Fund.
The trial will be delivered in partnership with Great Ocean Road Regional Tourism, Tourism Greater Geelong and The Bellarine, and Geelong-based employment agency Direct Recruitment, which will use a dedicated jobs bank to match employers with candidates.
Ms Thomas said the program would help tourism and hospitality businesses find skilled staff, and offer training through regional organisations to ensure staff have a range of skills to support those businesses.
“We’re looking to link employers with the jobseekers they need – whether that is baristas, bar staff or beauticians – supporting a successful summer season for the region’s vibrant tourism sector.,” Ms Thomas said. “The Tourism Jobs Bank will support businesses and it will be a boon for workers looking for rewarding work and to build their skills.”
Geelong state Labor MP Christine Couzens said the trail would help “lighten the load” for businesses on the hunt for summer staff, while providing easy access to a range of job opportunities.
“As the state opens up we know a lot of people will flock to our beautiful part of the world, which is great for business but brings with it workforce challenges,” Ms Couzens said.
Great Ocean Road Resort proprietor Damien Cerantonio welcomed the trial, which he said was a “new way we can tap into a larger pool of potential new staff we will need for our peak summer season as Victoria opens up”.
The Tourism Jobs Bank pilot project will feature a marketing campaign targeting tourism and hospitality businesses as well as jobseekers.
