HOW THE TAC IS DRIVING TOWARDS SOCIAL CHANGE

-

ONE of the Committee for Geelong’s great achievements in its 20-year history is attracting major government and corporate businesses to the region. This work has been vital in re-shaping Geelong into the city we see today – one that is very much on the rise.

We at the Transport Accident Commission are proud to be playing a role in Geelong’s drive forward, and are grateful for the Committee’s support in our relocation to the edge of Corio Bay a little over a decade ago.

When it was first proposed that the TAC move down the Princes Freeway, there were many who doubted whether a major Victorian agency would succeed in regional Victoria.

There were comments that we couldn’t service all Victorians if we weren’t operating out of the capital city. That we couldn’t attract the experienced professionals we need to run a multi-billion dollar social insurance organisation.

Over the past decade the TAC has shown that the decision was vindicated. In recent years we’ve had record client outcomes scores, fewer people being seriously injured on our roads and our financial position has never been stronger. As an employer of choice, we’ve not only been able to attract great talent from our region, but have witnessed people from all over the country choose to relocate to Geelong to join our team.

Such has been the success of the TAC, that since our arrival, WorkSafe and the National Disability Insurance Agency have also set up headquarters in Geelong.

The arrival of two other organisations who provide insurance for the entire community has created what is one of the world’s leading social insurance hubs.

Such is the city’s rapid growth in this field, only a decade after the TAC moved down the highway from Melbourne, the UN sent officials to Geelong to study how we are creating what some have referred to as “the Silicon Valley of social insurance”.

This city has already given us so much, and we at the TAC are committed to making a positive contribution to Geelong and the region.

We support numerous local organisations that are doing good in the region, ranging from Give Where You Live through to the Cadel Evans road race held locally each year.

We support local businesses through our procurement policies and practices.

And of course, we offer people living in the region careers in so many fields, with more than 70 per cent of our staff living in the Geelong region.

We have made one of the indelible characteristics of working at TAC a connection to this wonderful city and the surrounding region. We recognise that, as a major organisation, we are in a unique position to drive and support social change. That is why we have commenced our reconciliation journey, with our very first Reconciliation

Action Plan.
