MAN TO FACE TRIAL OVER FATAL NORLANE CRASH

- JESSICA COATES

A MAN will face trial over a crash that killed a 54-year-old motorcyclist in Norlane last year.

Police will allege the victim was on his way to work when he was struck by a turning car at an intersection on the corner of Melbourne and North Shore roads on March 16.

Maw Ji, who has pleaded not guilty, appeared in Geelong Magistrates Court via video link on Wednesday where he was committed to stand trial on one count of dangerous driving causing death.

Witness cross-examination focused on the alleged speed each vehicle was travelling at the time, and the signage in the area warning people not to make a left-hand turn.

Crash investigator and accident reconstruction expert Dr Jenelle Hardiman confirmed she arrived on the scene an hour after the crash.

“I was told it was dawn, it was getting light, but most vehicles still had headlights on which would suggest it was reasonably dark,” she said.

The court heard the victim was wearing dark clothes, but had his headlight on in the lead-up to the alleged crash.

Detective Acting Sergeant Phil Frith confirmed that CCTV footage from a nearby hotel showed the RAV4 allegedly driven by Maw Ji with its indicator on turning left at the intersection.

Reports from the time of the accident revealed an air ambulance was called to fly the motorcyclist to hospital, but he died at the scene.

Magistrate John Lesser ruled there was sufficient evidence for the matter to proceed to Geelong County Court in the new year.

The matter will come back before the courts on January 20.
