1921 ALEXANDER DUBCEK Czechoslov­ak politician

Dubcek served as the First Secretary of the Presidium of the Central Committee of the Communist party and de facto leader of Czechoslov­akia from 1968 until 1969. He was forced to resign after a Russian invasion.

1925 ERNIE WISE English comedian

Wise is best known as one half of the comedy duo Morecombe & Wise, who became a national institutio­n on national television, especially for their Christmas specials. In 1985.

1940 BRUCE LEE American martial artist

The son of a Cantonese opera star, Lee was born in San Francisco but raised in Hong Kong. He died in 1973 at the age of 32. Time magazine named Lee one of the 100 most influentia­l people of the 20th century.

American musician

Although his mainstream career lasted only four years, Hendrix is considered one of the most influentia­l guitarists of all time. He achieved fame in the US after his performanc­e at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. Hendrix died at age 27.

American director

Bigelow became the first woman to win the Academy Award for Best Director when she collected the gong for her film The Hurt Locker. Her other directing credits include Point

White is best known for his role as Steve Urkel in the sitcom Family Matters. The character was intended to be a one-time guest appearance, but was so popular with viewers that Urkel became a regular part of the cast.

New Zealand sheep Shrek, who gained

internatio­nal fame in 2004, avoided being caught and shorn for six years. After finally being caught, his shearing was shown on national television in New Zealand. Shrek’s fleece weighed in at a record 27kg – enough to make 20 large men’s suits.
