Dew and Hugh do the damage as Tigers get off the mark

- LACHIE YOUNG

THOMSON registered its first win of the season against Manifold Heights on Saturday afternoon, thanks largely to the efforts of veteran opening batsman Grant Dew and young opening quick Hugh Menzies.

Dew scored 87 in the Tigers’ 9-200 – the only batsman in the top seven to reach double figures – while Menzies cleaned up with the ball in the Sharks’ innings, producing figures of 3-28.

The result was just what Thomson ordered after the opening round of the season was washed out and its loss last week to Meredith, with Dew saying the Tigers had been keen to make a strong start to the year. “It is certainly nice to get on the board, that is for sure,” Dew said.

“It is something we tried to focus on this year, whereas last year we struggled early to get wins, it was one of our aims to have a good start.

“It is always nice to contribute and particularly when you have been out of the team for a while so it is nice to be a part of it and help the boys out.”

Mayuka Perera top-scored with 37 for Manifold Heights but the haul from Menzies brought his tally for the season to five already from two games. He has managed to do so at an average of just 11, drawing high praise from Dew for his efforts.

“I think he has grown into the role and he is still learning,” Dew said.

“He is only 18-19 years old so he is still learning his way in the game and to grab hold of the responsibility to lead the attack is something we have been really pleased with.

“We want to keep seeing that but it is very good to see him taking that on.”

Thomson will now return to Godfrey St where it will take on Lethbridge in round 4 of the GCA3 competition, while Manifold Heights, who remains winless, will travel to Teesdale.
