Get your fire plan in place

CFA calls for vigilance

THE REAL RISK THIS YEAR IS FAST-RUNNING GRASSFIRES, WHICH CAN BE QUITE DANGEROUS AND CAUSE DAMAGE.”

GEELONG residents have been warned not to let the cooler weather lull them into a false sense of security this bushfire season.

No formal fire danger period has been declared for the majority of the region due to extended wet weather, but an announcement could be made in coming weeks.

CFA District 7 commander Darren Power warned residents against being complacent when preparing their properties or organising a fire safety plan.

“Ongoing wet weather means that this year’s summer will be similar to last year’s in that the danger in the bush will be reduced,” Mr Power said.

“The real risk this year is fast-running grassfires, which can be quite dangerous and cause damage.”

He pointed to the 2018 Little River grassfire, which burned through more than 1200ha of land between the town and Wyndham Vale and destroyed a number of sheds.

“We’re asking all residents to be prepared and have a plan in place,” he said.

“It’s important to monitor conditions and the local fire danger rating, as well as preparing your property against potential fires.”

lead-up to the bushfire season.

Decisions are made based on rainfall, grassland curing rate and other conditions.

Across in the Golden Plains Shire, the fire danger period is due to start at 1am on Monday, December 13.

Golden Plains Shire confirmed its fire hazard inspection program had already issued 275 fire prevention notices on properties throughout the municipality, the majority of which were vacant or unoccupied.

“In October, council began its own fire prevention works, commencing the annual roadside slashing program of all sealed roads and strategic fire breaks to reduce fuel loads,” it read.

“Council is anticipating another 470km of roadsides will be slashed in the lead up to the Christmas period.”

Due to recent wet weather, the council also allowed some extensions for properties unable to complete works by December 5.

To request an extension, email enquiries@gplains.vic.gov.au or call 5220 7111.
