Troubled club opens door again

AN EMBATTLED Queenscliff sporting club has reopened after a wave of resignations and allegations of a “toxic” work environment.

Queenscliff Bowling, Tennis and Croquet Club (QBTC) announced it would temporarily close last week, but reopened its doors on Monday.

A statement emailed to members and seen by the Geelong Advertiser announced the Gaming and Members lounge reopened on December 13, and the Bistro would reopen on Thursday.

“Unfortunately, due to staff shortages, the Bistro will be open for both lunch and dinner, Thursday through to Sunday only. This will continue on a weekly basis until further notice,” the statement read.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank you for your patience and understanding during the regrettable but necessary closure.”

Another email written by club management and seen by the Addy revealed senior staff had quit, and the temporary closure was due to a lack of staff and the need to properly investigate complaints.

“Several current and former staff have made allegations of harassment, bullying, intimidation, and allege that they have fallen victim to bombarded attacks of negativity and misinformation coming from a small (but clearly aggrieved) group of QBTC members.

“It’s been alleged that these attacks have been sustained for several months now and the club has received the resignation this week of the general manager, assistant general manager, operations manager, chef and duty manager.”

The initial email also said that the club’s management would have “more to say” about the situation.

The club’s general manager declined to comment.

Monday’s coverage of this story incorrectly stated that Bob Merriman was the chairman of the club. He no longer holds this position and is a board member.
