STAR POWER ON AND OFF THE FIELD

- JOSH BARNES

THE budding talent at St Joseph’s was shown the path forward on and off the ground on Sunday when Australian youngster Annabel Sutherland watched Joeys post an impressive A-grade victory.

Joeys skipper Liz Tubb continued her excellent form by making 51 not out to steer her side to 3-113, a total it defended comfortably against Portarlington.

The day doubled as the club’s female day, and Sutherland was on hand to talk to the juniors. The hard-hitting Melbourne Star discussed her path to the top and gave the young Joeys some tips as they forge their own path.

“To have her down and to inspire some of those younger and older girls was nice, just to have her experience and have a chat about how she got where she got,” Tubb said. “It was pretty inspiring for the girls.”

Tubb’s unbeaten halfcentury was well supported by Monique Connell (21) and Christine Sheedy (17 not out).

In reply, Portarlington was no match for the Joeys bowlers, managing 7-75 from 20 overs.

Emerging players such as Sara Martini (0-11), Paris Knight (1-15) and Millie Taylor (1-7) all bowled well.

“We have a lot of juniors developing in the team and we have an extremely strong bowling line-up,” Tubb said. “We are working on our batting and getting there bit by bit.

“They have a great junior program going on at Joeys. I am very jealous I wasn’t a part of it many years ago.”

In other BWCC A-grade results on the weekend,

East Belmont made it five from five by beating Geelong West Finnemore, Barrabool was too strong for a gallant Highton and Ocean Grove chased down North Geelong Black.
