Council awards contracts for pool projects
AN Australian construction firm has been awarded contracts for two major Geelong pool projects.
Geelong councillors voted on Tuesday to award contracts for the Northern Aquatic & Community Hub (NACH) and the North Bellarine Aquatic Centre to Kane Constructions.
The NACH project will redevelop Norlane’s Waterworld
and Centenary Hall facility, providing health and recreation services in Geelong’s north.
Cr Kylie Grzybek said the project would complement the hard work of staff at Barwon Health North in Norlane.
“This is not just about a pool or a water slide, this is a community hub,” she said. “It’s about health services and lifting them to the standard we have across all of Geelong.”
The NACH project will be delivered through $44.84m from the City of Greater Geelong, a $8.5m commitment from the state government and $8.262m in federal funding.
Cr Anthony Aitken said Kane Constructions had built a number of prominent local buildings.
These included the Geelong Library and Heritage Centre, the first two stages of the Geelong Arts Centre and stages of the Kardinia Park redevelopment.
“It’s delivering on a project that means a lot for the northern suburbs,” he said.
“We are the forgotten part of Geelong in terms of investment and infrastructure.”
The first stage of the Northern Bellarine Aquatic Centre will develop a 50m outdoor pool and associated facilities in Drysdale.
In partnership with the federal government, the proposed construction contract is just over $13.03m.
A third contract, for construction of the $13m Armstrong West Community Hub, was awarded to Fairbrother Pty Ltd.
All three projects were considered through panel recommendations after a competitive open process.
