Cusack looks good as gold

- BRAD WATERS

ANOTHER look at the Gold Coast track almost has Victorian colt Cusack ready to tackle Saturday week’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic.

Cusack won his way into the rich Gold Coast event when he saluted in the $250,000 Magic Millions race at Ballarat in November.

TAB has Cusack as a $34 chance to win the Magic Millions 2YO Classic.

Trainers Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young decided to run the son of Not A Single Doubt in the $2m 2YO Classic without another race.

Cusack won a 900m Gold Coast trial on December 20, before stepping up to 1000m in his latest trial on the track on Tuesday morning.

Cusack ran one of the slower times of the morning, but Busuttin said the youngster trialled well within himself.

“It wasn’t breathtaking, but he wasn’t asked to do much,” said Busuttin.

“What we asked him to do, he did it with ease.

“He cornered well on that tight inside corner there.

“Andrew Mallyon has been riding him throughout, and he said it was the best piece of work he’d done.”

Busuttin and Young entered Cusack for the $125,000 Aquis Gold Nugget.

But Busuttin said that entry was a back-up plan in case Tuesday’s trials were called off.

Cusack will have his final gallop before the Magic Millions Classic next Tuesday.

“He’ll do one more piece of work now, and he’ll be ready for the big race,” he said.

“All he’ll need is to draw a good barrier,” Busuttin said.

Showers are forecast every day for at least the next week.

But Busuttin said he would not mind if wet ground greeted Cusack next Saturday.

“He won one of his early jumpouts on a very heavy track, and there aren’t too many Not A Single Doubts that don’t get through the wet,” he said.

Craig Newitt takes the ride.
