FIREWORKS TO MAKE SAILS FEST A CRACKER
THE Festival of Sails will go off with a bang next weekend with a fireworks display over Corio Bay announced by the city.
The City of Greater Geelong and the Royal Geelong Yacht Club announced they would provide free fireworks at 9.30pm on
January 22 to mark the start of the five-day regatta.
Geelong Deputy Mayor Trent Sullivan said the council would cover the cost of the display.
“We hope families come to the waterfront because it’s going to be a cracker night,” Mr Sullivan said.
“The festival will be a little different this year because of Covid19
restrictions, but we’re hoping people make the most of the sailing, spectacular fireworks and free live music on offer in venues across central Geelong.”
The Saturday night fireworks will replace the Royal Geelong
Yacht Club’s usual Australia Day fireworks event in a bid to boost the
appeal of the event and provide free entertainment on the
Saturday night.
Festival of Sails chairman Roger Bennett said this year’s regatta entertainment would include a live music initiative called Gigs by Festival of Sails, in which more than 40 bands will be performing at
venues throughout the CBD during the regatta.
“While the conditions of 2022 have meant we can’t deliver our traditional Waterfront Festival this year, we’re hoping our Gigs program will give our local live music, hospitality and events industry a bit of a boost with free entertainment
for the community,” Mr Bennett said.
This week the Bundaberg crew, skippered by John Kint, past commodore of the RGYC, was preparing for the Festival of the Sails by doing some twilight sailing.
