Fixture change no bother for Geelong

- JOSH BARNES

GEELONG has little concern its preparation will be impacted too greatly after its opponent for round 2 was changed just over 48 hours before the bounce.

The Cats had to adjust to a new reality on Thursday afternoon when it was confirmed their opponent for Saturday’s AFLW clash had changed from the Western Bulldogs to Carlton.

Despite spending five days planning to tackle the Dogs, Cats AFLW boss Brett Johnson said the sudden switch wouldn’t throw out any grand plans for the match.

Johnson was confident most coaches tuned in last Sunday to see Carlton get touched up by Collingwood by 19 points.

“I think what you do in round 1 is watch most games, so all the coaches saw the Carlton-Collingwood game on the weekend,” he said.

“I think for us and where we are in our journey, it is more about us being able to execute our game style and have some consistency in each quarter with that.

“For us our focus is we are just looking to improve every week and we are really confident in our preparation and our training.”

While they haven’t been forced into mass changes, the

Cats have also had players locked into isolation.

Given AFLW players are not full-time athletes, they still need to attend work and live life to a relatively normal degree.

But Johnson said he was confident his players would do their best to avoid the virus.

“I think our players have been really diligent and thinking through the decisions they make away from the club but I think even if you do that, some people are just going to get it (Covid) anyway,” he said.

“We just have to make sure we value training and put in the work so you are ready to come back even if you do miss some time.”
