Win shows what could have been

- JOSH BARNES

BELL PARK 8-211 ALEXANDER THOMSON 61

A DOMINANT win over Alexander Thomson has left Bell Park frustrated it could not pull off similar complete performances this season.

The Dragons outclassed the Vikings on Saturday, compiling 8-211 behind skipper Mick Lymer’s 79, before Shane Lymer (5-13) marched through the Vikings batters and knocked them over for 61.

After the win, Bell Park still sits in sixth in GCA2 – two wins out of the top-four – leaving Mick Lymer all but resigned to missing the finals in his last campaign as captaincoach.

“I said to the boys, it’s actually a little bit frustrating,” he said.

“As good as it is to dominate a side like that, it shows what we are capable of and there have probably been three or four games where we have batted decent and bowled rubbish or we will bowl well and hold a side to 160-180 and then we can’t go out and make the runs.

“It is frustrating but when it all comes together like it did yesterday . . . that was pretty good.

“We have got to the point where we have to play some carefree cricket. It looks like our season could be basically all but done, so it is more about bigger picture stuff like club championship and personal pride.”

Having felt confident about his form, Lymer shuffled the Bell Park order to put himself up as an opener after batting in the middle order and it paid off with his first halfcentury of the summer.

Mitch Trask followed Lymer with a powerful 33 from 19 balls that included four sixes, before taking the first two wickets of the Vikings innings.

When Shane Lymer and Daniel Vakirevic (3-18) had an hour of power and combined to take 8-18, Mick Lymer’s 79 outscored Alexander Thomson’s whole XI.

“Shane and Daniel put together an unbelievable hour of cricket,” Mick Lymer said.

“We always say when we walk off that we don’t get any luck and it wasn’t so much about luck yesterday but things just went our way and it is a good feeling and a good confidence booster.”
