Greens councillor throws her hat in ring for state poll

- HARRISON TIPPET

GEELONG councillor Sarah Mansfield will contest November’s state election for the Greens.

The local GP will be the party’s lead candidate for the Western Region as it attempts to gain the balance of power in the Upper House.

Her bid for a state seat follows former mayor Stephanie Asher’s failed attempt to win the seat of Corangamite at the May federal poll.

Dr Mansfield said she planned to remain at City Hall as a councillor until “nomination day” on November 1.

She would then take a leave of absence until the election outcome was known.

Dr Mansfield said she would not be paid her council allowance during that time.

“If successful, I will resign as a councillor in order to represent our region in the Victorian Legislative Council,” she said.

“If unsuccessful, I will resume serving the community as a councillor.

“I’m very mindful of separating the roles of councillor and candidate, and will take steps to ensure I do not distract from the important work of our council.”

Dr Mansfield revealed increasing frustration during her time in local government.

“Our region is being left behind, and we need strong action at state level to achieve the necessary major improvements in public transport, affordable housing, rental affordability and healthcare we deserve,” she said. “We must tackle the climate crisis by replacing coal and gas with 100 per cent renewable energy by 2030, and protect our precious 12 Apostles from gas drilling.

“Western Victoria is one of the most desirable places to live in Australia and I’m proud to call it home for me and my young family. But without urgent action we face critical threats to our liveability.”
