August 2012: After Carlton won 11 games to miss finals after playing off in a semifinal the previous season, Ratten was sacked with one year left to run on his contract.

2013 to 2018: Following his departure from the Blues, Ratten served as an assistant coach to Alastair Clarkson at Hawthorn for six seasons, including during the club’s premiershi­p three-peat from 2013-15.

August 2018: St Kilda announced that Ratten would be appointed as an assistant coach to underpress­ure coach Alan Richardson for the 2019 season, stating he had been a “key driver” in Hawthorn’s premiershi­p success.

July 2019: Alan Richardson resigned as St Kilda senior coach 16 games into the season, with Ratten installed as caretaker coach for the final six games. The Saints won three of the last six games.

September 2019: At the end of the season, St Kilda’s board endorsed a recommenda­tion from the coaching selection subcommitt­ee to appoint Ratten as coach. President Andrew Bassat said at the time that Ratten had provided the club with “great confidence that he is the right person to lead our football program”.

July 2022: Having entered the season out of contract, Ratten was reappointe­d on a new two-year deal until the end of 2024 after the Saints made an 9-6 start to the year. President Andrew Bassat declared Ratten was “the best person to lead us towards our much longedfor second premiershi­p”. August 2022: St Kilda lost five of its final seven games of the season after Ratten’s reappointm­ent to miss finals for a second-straight season.

October 2022: The Saints announce Ratten has been sacked following a review of the club’s football operations.
