Car toilet block drama

- NAOMI NEILSON

A CAR slammed into an East Geelong toilet block on what proved a busy weekend for emergency services still dealing with the fallout from recent storms and flooding.

Geelong’s SES unit was called to the corner of Ormond Rd and Garden St about 11am on Saturday after a “vehicle collided with a toilet block”, causing significant damage to the building, a spokesperson said.

“Geelong unit volunteers worked with a building surveyor from the City of Greater Geelong to stabilise part of the damaged building and cordoned off the area with SES tape for public safety,” the spokesperson said.

Fire Rescue Victoria, Ambulance Victoria and police also assisted with drivers and the scene.

The SES unit was also called out on Friday after reports a tree had fallen onto Moorabool St and the footpath in Geelong’s CBD.

As the tree fell about 2.30pm, it hit a “passing truck” and a few cars parked along the road outside Christ Church Geelong, but did not cause any major damage.

Luckily no pedestrians were injured.

“VICSES volunteers worked with Fire Rescue Victoria and Victoria Police to cut up and clear the tree from the road and from the top of the truck, and the area was cleared by 4pm,” the spokesperson said. “No major damage to vehicles was reported.”

The spokesperson said the incidents followed 13,689 requests across the state last month in response to “widespread flooding and storms”.

“These requests for assistance for VICSES Geelong unit volunteers follow the busiest month on record for VICSES,” the spokesperson said.
