Poop throw claims

A GEELONG man, arrested for an alleged CBD attack, defecated in his hat and threw it at the wall of a police station cell, a court has heard.

Darren Butcher, 51, of no fixed address faced Geelong Magistrates Court on Friday charged over the alleged assault.

Leading Senior Constable Kylie Jane claimed CCTV footage captured Mr Butcher and a co-accused chasing another man down Little Malop St before a fight broke out in front of a 7-Eleven corner store.

It’s alleged the co-accused threw the victim to the ground, and Mr Butcher kicked him to the head and punched him multiple times. Police said officers witnessed “significant” amounts of blood on the ground and on the victim, who suffered a broken hand and needed 12 stitches.

Mr Butcher, who appeared in court via videolink, allegedly became aggressive with police and cap-sicum spray was used.

He was arrested and taken to Geelong police station. The court heard while Mr Butcher was in his cell, he allegedly defecated in his hat and threw the contents at a wall.

Defence lawyer Jacob Mildren said his client had recently found himself sleeping rough, and woke to find his things being stolen in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Mr Mildren conceded the allegations were “serious”, but argued Mr Butcher had a lack of recent criminal history.

Senior Constable Jane raised concerns about community safety and whether Mr Butcher would appear at court if he was released.

Magistrate John Bentley remanded Mr Butcher in custody to appear before the court on November 23.
