Cooper off to a flying start for Magpies

- WES CUSWORTH

ANY doubt Ned Cooper’s sublime BPCA batting could transition to GCA1 were emphatically laid to rest as the former Anglesea star carved a brilliant century on debut to lead North Geelong to success over Highton.

Cooper pulled, cut and drove his way to a majestic 150-ball 117, with his authoritative innings only ending when the elegant left-hander was caught short of his ground in desperate pursuit of late runs.

“Obviously we’ve had that postponed start to the season, and everyone has been itching to get out there, so it was great to finally get a game and get a win,” Cooper said post game.

“It’s a bit different with the bowlers a little more skilled and a bit quicker, although the BPCA bowlers can make that two-piece ball move around all day.

“Even though it’s a different style of cricket I feel that my lengthy pre-season at North has prepared me well for this standard of cricket.”

Despite losing evergreen opening partner Sam Hall early, Cooper bludgeoned three towering sixes and nine fours as he teamed with Curtly Balshaw (42), Layton McCann (42) and Alistair McCann (34 not out) in constructing 5-273, with Highton falling well short at 125.

Despite the success, Cooper acknowledged a tinge of apprehension as he joined fellow BPCA Roo Dale Kerr in debuting for the Magpies.

“There were a few nerves heading into the game and at the start of the innings but that’s just about wanting to do well and perform for the side,” Cooper said.

“Fortunately, we’ve trained hard and prepared well with a plan to be successful and I was soon able to settle into my innings.”
