All-Australian nod ‘crazy’ for top Cat

SCHEER’S WORK PAYS OFF

- OLLIE NASH

STAR Geelong forward Chloe Scheer concedes she didn’t “really impact” season 6, so to make the AFLW AllAustralian team in season 7 is “crazy to think about”.

Scheer was joined in the final 21 by fellow first-time All-Australians Amy McDonald and Georgie Prespakis, capping off one of Geelong’s finest AFLW seasons in its short history.

Scheer also took home mark of the year for her effort against North Melbourne in round 4.

“I didn’t know if I was going to win it (mark of the year), I mean they were all very good marks so it could’ve went any way,” Scheer said.

“Like I said (Tuesday) night, I’ll take the win.”

Scheer enjoyed a stellar season, averaging a careerbest 4.3 score involvements per game, which ranked equal third in the competition.

She ranked first in marks inside 50 with 2.2 per game as well as a close second in contested marks (1.6).

Scheer said the All-Australian nod was reward for “all the hard work” she has put in since joining the Cats ahead of season 6.

“It’s a huge honour,” she said. “Season 6 I felt like I didn’t really impact at all and then obviously six months later … to make All-Australian, it’s crazy to think about.

“But it’s just, I guess, a reward for all the hard work I put in during the two seasons. (I’m) very proud.”

Two-time Geelong best and fairest winner Amy McDonald said it was a bonus to be selected in the final team alongside Prespakis and Scheer.

“Being able to get in the team with Pres and Scheery definitely makes it just that little bit more special,” McDonald said.

“To be able to do it with those girls and to have quite a few of the other Cats girls there … and some of the staff just makes it that little bit more special as they’re the ones that we go to work with each day.”

While being the best player she can be is McDonald’s goal, the “bigger picture” of team success is a driving force for the star midfielder and her teammates ahead of 2023.

“I guess individually we all want to be the best that we can be, so that’s individually my goal,” she said. “I think the bigger picture for us is just building as a group and really working towards that sustained, long-term success down at the Cats.”

Prespakis’s selection comes in just her second season, a campaign that saw her finish equal second in the AFLCA AFLW champion player of the year award despite missing two home-andaway matches due to suspension.
