Warriors home in on big finish after flat start to season

- Matthew Forrest

Modewarre co-coach Chris Carlon says a difficult stint on the road has been part of the problematic start to the season for the club, with the Warriors on just three wins after eight games.

The Warriors played their first six games on the road as Moriac Reserve underwent facility upgrades to its drainage, with just two wins coming against Queenscliff and Portarlington, and a massive 175point loss to Barwon Heads coming on the road trip.

After just one game at home, a round 6 clash against Drysdale, in the opening eight rounds, Carlon said the players were excited at the prospect of four straight home games.

“Playing the first six games away from home, we felt that played a bit of a part in our start to the season,” he said. “We didn’t really have a home, we didn’t have a ground to train on, so we felt a bit displaced.

“We feel a lot more comfortable now, and just to get to play back at home like we did a few weeks ago makes such a difference. So we’ll get a fair few home games in the back end, which hopefully makes our run home a bit easier.”

Modewarre has enjoyed a strong advantage at Moriac Reserve in previous seasons, with many opposing coaches around the competition conceding it was a difficult ground to play at.

Carlon said a strong run home would set up a finals campaign for the Warriors.

“It’s a massive advantage for us, teams don’t like coming here,” he said.

“The draining and the watering system just didn’t get done in time for the start of the season, so we were able to get our home games stacked at the back end of the season.

“We pick up a few games on the run home, playing at home will be huge for us, we can play our brand of footy there and that’ll help us for sure.”
