Cougars look to grab trial chance

-

“It’s looking exciting, it’s looking good, it’s such a high performance environment.”

Expressing early interest in being part of the new competition, Morey, who also plays for GFNL club South Barwon, said she was both grateful and shocked by her selection some months later, considering the “calibre of athletes across Victoria”.

But after watching the likes of former Cougar Zara

Walters get contracted at the Vixens this year, as well as current teammate Brooke Allen’s training partner status at Melbourne Mavericks, Morey can see a pathway forward.

“You look up to these girls and then you can see that, your not only training with them but then you see them make it to that next level, and your like ‘wow, it is possible, there is opportunities’,” she said.

“It makes you feel like there is something there and something for you to really work towards.”

Morey has embraced the step up to the Cougars’ VNL championship roster this year, with the ability to play on stronger opponents developing her game smarts, while a recent under-19 National Netball Championship appearance for Victoria pitted Morey against some of Australia’s best young netballers.

Despite an omission as a bottom-age under-19 player for the 2023 championships, Morey said she was motivated to push on and get re-selected as a top-ager.

“Coming back, it’s just such an exciting environment,” she said. “It was a tough little knock-back but it was just another challenge I had to get over.

“I’ve got a lot of intrinsic motivation to just push to the next year.

“It just made me work even harder and fight for my position the next year.”
