Golf Australia

GETAWAYS: GOLF TRAVEL

- |

What lies 2,750 kilometres northwest of Perth and has the only golf course in the world that crosses an international airport runway?

It’s the Cocos Keeling Islands, a remote territory of Australia, that is made up of 27 islands, boasts the best beach in the country and is home to 600 people.

The white sand and azure waters of the Indian Ocean combine to produce world-class diving, fishing and surfing. While land-lovers are spoilt for choice, too, with beautiful coconut palms, empty beaches, birdwatching and golf on offer.

The Cocos Islands Golf Club presents a fun, nine-hole course that incredibly plays across a runway. Enjoy views of the lagoon while watching planes taking-off and landing during a game of Scroungers; a weekly team game that allows you to mingle with the locals over some beverages.

While over on Home Island, you have the chance to learn about the Clunies-Ross family, the former rulers of the Islands, at the tremendous Oceania House.

Embrace the culture and traditions of the Cocos Malay people, especially the cuisine, before continuing your island-hopping journey on the ferry to Direction Island; home to the picturesque Cossies Beach (recently named the best in Australia).

The following link is a great place to start planning your trip to Cocos, where you can organise tours, accommodation and activities.

CRUISING BUCKET LIST COURSES

Trendsetter Travel & Cruise Centre is promoting two luxury Ireland and United Kingdom golf cruises for summer and autumn, 2018.

Firstly, in June, a circumnavigation of Ireland over 13 nights with 11 games of golf at a wonderful array of courses. Before September’s spectacular 14-night trip around the UK with nine rounds of golf.

The Irish cruise features games at World Top-100 rated courses including Royal County Down and The European Club (pictured). While passengers on the UK cruise will also experience Trump Turnberry; one of the world’s top-20 courses.

Consistent with Trendsetter’s policy of only scheduling its golf tours on small luxury ships, both tours are on Oceania’s 684-passenger ship Nautica (pictured left) and include Wi-Fi, gratuities and meals.

And, if your travel companion isn’t a golfer, each port promises an array of exciting shore excursions to ensure an equally enjoyable cruise experience.
