‘You can save shots in your mind before you even swing with club’

-

1 Be realistic and pick the right club

Amateurs under-club a lot because they don’t really hit a lot of good shots out the middle of the clubface. If I ask an amateur how far they hit their 7-iron they’ll say their best shot but they don’t hit it perfectly all the time, so they’re constantly coming up short. It’s easy to take one more club, hit more greens and give yourself more birdie putts.

2 Focus on the good shots you played

I like the emotional part of golf, but you can’t be too up and down on the course. Some guys get really frustrated if they’re playing really poorly – and that’s fine – but sometimes you have to take a step back and think about the good shots. It’s always better to focus on the positives. You’ll enjoy your golf more, and you’ll probably play better as well.

3 Move on quickly from the negatives

When you’re playing with your buddies and one of them hits a really good drive everyone will pay them a compliment. But you know not to say too much if they hit a drive out of bounds. You have to take the same approach to your own shots. Acknowledge the good ones, but move on quickly from the bad ones.

4 Find the mental state that works for you

Whether showing your emotions is good or bad for your game depends on who you are. Francesco Molinari doesn’t show you anything, but then you get guys like Ian Poulter who like to go crazy sometimes. Whatever gets you going and helps you play the best golf is the best way for you to be on the course.

5 Visualise the times you played a hole well

We all have holes on courses that we just don’t like or play well. Sometimes there’s no logical reason for it. If I play a hole or shot I’m uncomfortable with, then I’ll visualise a time when I hit that exact shot or one like it really well. In fact, you can do it on every hole. Every time I step on a tee, I recall the best time I played that hole. That little bit of positivity really does work.
