I go to the gym up to four times a week to do cardio workouts but would like to substitute one or two gym sessions with a round of golf? How many calories can I burn playing 18 holes on foot? Jason Lacey

There is plenty of research to suggest a round of golf, walking, is the equivalent of an average 30-minute session in the gym.

Think about this way. In 18 holes you are to walk, on average, approximat­ely six to seven kilometres (depending on the overall length of the course) and there is going to be arm exercises performed when you swing. Then, consider, if the course you are playing is hilly or covers a larger than normal area.

Ultimately, taking all this into account, you should burn between 1,400 and 1,600 calories, which will certainly benefit your health.
