Good

Purpose & passion

- Carolyn Enting, editor carolyn@good.net.nz

At the recent Sustainable Business Network Conference I was struck by something Avram Deitch of Yealands Wine Group said during a panel discussion about Purpose in an Age of Authenticity, and how to instill purpose at the core of your business. He said, “There’s a differentiation between passion and purpose. Passion is what gets you up in the morning – it’s what gets you fired up for the day. Purpose is the lens that you push your passion through." That resonated with me and got me thinking about personal purpose too because my job as editor of Good fills me with this. I’m grateful every day to work on a publication with a conscious-living ethos that is perfectly aligned with my own. I live, breathe, eat Good because I’m just so passionate about it and as best-selling author, Emma Mildon, of The Soul Searcher’s Handbook: The Modern Girl’s Guide to the New Age World shared with me in an interview, “When you are living your purpose you are never on the clock because you don’t feel like you need to check in because you are not chained to anything”.

So as we enter the New Year, leaving behind 2016 which has been challenging for many on different levels – from earthquakes to elections – the team at Good was inspired to dedicate this issue to purpose (see our special feature starting on page 35).

And, I have good news to share too. You may have read my article in the previous issue of Good about the truth behind tiger tourism in Thailand. World Animal Protection has informed us that the article has helped make a tangible difference and a positive step towards protecting these majestic animals from exploitation and cruelty.

Good wants to congratulate First Group Travel (which includes YOU Travel). All of its 69 independently owned stores in New Zealand have committed to not sending their customers or selling tickets to tiger tourism venues where you can take tiger selfies or watch tigers perform. That includes not selling tickets to venues where you can ride or watch elephants perform too.

Performances we do endorse are the array of wonderful summer festivals that have great line-ups of musicians, inspiring speakers and fun times, including Splore, WOMAD, Sundaise and Wanderlust (page 16). Summer is a time for getting together with family and friends, swapping shoes for jandals or bare feet. Relax, refresh, reset.
