Good

Suck on this

Not only do CaliWoods reusable stainless steel straws make drinks look ridiculously good but they’re non-leaching unlike their petrochemical compatriots. And if CaliWoods founder Shay Lawrence has her dreams come true, her straws will help reduce the problem of plastic pollution in our oceans.

A self-described “oceanbased creature”, Lawrence is surfing when she’s not working on CaliWoods, which she founded in July this year.

When she discovered that the plastic straws humans throw away every day could go around the earth 2.5 times if joined end-to-end she was shocked.

Lawrence worked for the super yacht industry for six years before throwing in the towel because “super yachts are obviously the epitome of consumption”.

However, while the experience was counter-intuitive to what she is doing now, it was eye opening.

She now has a few super yacht clients and her goal is to work with the hospitality industry to create an even bigger effect “because when it’s in your face and normalised, plastic straws will be marginalised by the industry themselves and that’s where we are going to see the biggest change.”

She also encourages CaliStraw users to share photos of the straws on social media using the hashtag #MyCaliStraw to spread the message far and wide.
