Eat Less Plastic Ambassador

-

Why is this voyage important? Change is already underway but unfortunately it is very important to continue spreading the message as often and as wide spread as possible so this huge Earth issue can be handled. News can be fleeting these days with information overload. The environment, our home and the home of all living creatures on this planet should always be in the forefront of our minds.

Why did you get on board?

I believe the responsibility lies with all of us. If I’m someone that young people look up to then my voice deserves to be heard. I’m from the Pacific, the ocean is very important to New Zealanders and indeed to all Pacific Islanders. We are connected to it as a life force and it brings us immense joy. I hope I can help make a difference by positive actions towards using less plastic and urging others to do the same. How can Kiwis step up?

It‘s up to us to lead the way.

New Zealand should make a stand against single-use plastics. The issue of packaging with plastic should be addressed and the corporations responsible need to be brought together for a meeting to discuss a change. This change needs to be implemented now. Most plastics, especially for packaging and also straws, need to be banned. I propose a ‘ban meeting.’

How do you reduce plastic?

My household no longer uses single-use straws. We carry metal and bamboo straws around with us which we take home and wash. We say no to plastic bags and choose supermarkets which supply their fruit and vegetables without plastic wrapping. My kids say no to plastic cups at restaurants. Word of mouth is the key. Spread the word, spread the attitude.
