Eat & drink Jordan style
Eating your way around Jordan is a gastronomic experience. Olive oil
Jordanians believe the olive is a blessed tree. Not holy but blessed, says Ab. There are millions of olive trees in Jordan and they still import olive oil and use it for cooking, eating and home remedies. Traditional breakfast is bread dipped in olive oil, dried thyme and sesame seeds.
Cucumber
A Petra lunch box item that may have you perplexed, however you will be grateful for its thirstquenching properties in the 30-degree heat.
Maqluba
Also known as ‘Upside Down’, ingredients of this tasty chicken, vegetable and rice dish are cooked together and flipped at the end, so the juices from the meat and vegetables flavour the rice.
Mansaf
A delicious traditional dish of lamb cooked with a sauce of fermented dry yoghurt and served on rice.
Lemon and mint
This refreshing and flavoursome drink is a classic favourite throughout the Middle East for good reason.
Falafel and mint
One for the vegetarians. Pita bread filled with fresh falafel, hummus, olive oil, tomatoes and fresh mint is a ‘mint’ combo that’s also very filling.
Pomegranate juice
It is easy to find fresh pomegranate juice – Jordanians drink it for good heart health.
Pizza
Pita bread topped with thyme and feta cheese is the Jordanians equivalent of the Italian margherita.
Water
Take a reusable water bottle with you. Exodus Travels helps eliminate plastic waste by providing refillable water stations throughout your journey.
