Changing Rooms
Reviving home spaces on a shoestring is possible and fun.
How to redecorate your home on zero budget
Rearrange the furniture
This really can transform a whole room. Consider whether the whole room could be reoriented or whether the main piece of furniture could swap walls. Make sure you have a measuring tape on hand before you start moving things around.
Sign up for swaps
Or keep an eye on your neighbourhood Facebook page. Often you can find pieces that people want to get rid of, and all they cost are your time to go and pick them up. Chances are these sorts of items need a little TLC, but it’s worth it. And don’t forget garage sales where items are practically free.
Style with second-hand items
Antiques and second-hand items add depth to a space. It’s the perfectly imperfect nature of these items that gives your space life. You don’t need to buy a big piece of furniture to get this effect – a few small items here and there won’t cost a lot, but they can add so much interest and character to your space. And the best part? Buying second-hand is eco-friendly.
Upcycle items in your house
You’ll be amazed at how many items in your home could benefit from being upcycled. Painting furniture is a really easy way to start, and you can give cupboards new fronts, and add new knobs to drawers.
Do a cull of your space
Crowding too many things into a room can make it feel small and claustrophobic, which often gives the impression that there’s something wrong with the décor. Sometimes all you need to do is introduce a bit of negative space (emptiness) to a room to make it feel as if you’ve done a major renovation!
Embrace baskets
Baskets are another décor item that add texture to your space without too much colour or distraction. They’re great for storage, making them functional as well as pretty. Baskets are perfect in spaces like the kitchen and laundry that require lots of different ways to store (aka cover up) items like food supplies and clothing, and they also make great planters.
