Get your goddess on

Idon’t know about you but I have struggled with body positivity my whole life. Today, when I look back at photographs of my younger self I think, ‘gosh, I looked great!’ though at the time that wasn’t my perception.

When I looked in the mirror I saw pigmentation marks on my skin, a round belly and cellulite to name a few hang-ups. This has affected my confidence in how I have presented myself in many aspects of my life, including sexually.

Now that I’m older and wiser I’ve learned to love my curves, though I’d be lying if I said I still didn’t allow my weight to affect how I feel. When I’m skinnier I feel more confident. Yet, I have a friend who is naturally slim who also struggles with body image and believes she is too thin. It is all perception, and it is crazy how so many of us have this struggle.

Of course, being bombarded with images of airbrushed, photoshopped models through media and advertising over the past few decades hasn’t helped. The current body positivity movement is thankfully rewriting that narrative and Good is honoured to be featuring the work of photographer Nami Julia Hampe on the cover of this issue and The Goddess Within and Sexual Expression stories on pages 14 to 23. Hampe is helping women to step out of their comfort zone and celebrate their bodies in front of a camera lens. These images are absolutely beautiful and incredibly powerful, and a reminder for us to celebrate all of ourselves.

“Always remember you are braver than you believe. Stronger than you seem. Smarter and twice as beautiful as you’d ever imagined.”
